Thinned Tomatoes

all of the tomato seeds i planted have sprouted (i have 9 seedlings but i will only need 2 in the end). several of the seedlings are developing true leaves. they are a couple of inches tall and i think it is time that they have more space to grow.

i thinned the weaker seedlings by cutting them with sharp pruning shears at the soil line. i am left with 1 seedling per cell. i will let them grow a little longer in their cells so that i can keep them under the light. when they get a little bigger or when their roots start to fill their cell, i will pot up the 2 strongest and place them in my windowsill. i am feeding them with a diluted liquid fertilizer every time i water them.

Before Thinning (3 in each cell)

After Thinning (1 in each cell)

  1. i did my best to decide which seedlings were "stronger" but really i have no idea. how do you know which ones to keep and which ones are no good? i think just because they are bigger doesn't mean they are stronger, it just means they were first to sprout, right?
